cosmetic acupuncture FAQs

How Many Treatments Are Needed?

A study in the International Journal of Clinical Acupuncture showed that of 300 people who received Facial Acupuncture, 90% demonstrated marked results after only their first treatment, but the best and longest lasting results are obtained from a course of treatments. This is because acupuncture works cumulatively and can promote changes to the skin at a deep cellular level.

To get the best results at least six sessions are recommended. Improvements can be noticed after the first session, and more visible changes after the third or fourth sessions.

How Often Should I Come?

With the six and twelve treatment packages, it is advisable to attend sessions weekly initially, dropping down to once a fortnight and then monthly as you progress through the course of treatment. It is recommended that to maintain the health of your skin you attend for a maintenance session at least every twelve weeks thereafter.

Is It Painful?

In the hands of an experienced practitioner, Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture is no more uncomfortable than having eyebrows plucked or threaded.  Emphasis is placed on making each patient as comfortable as possible and treatment starts with points on the body and ears that have a grounding and anaesthetising effect. Treatment is then proceeded with the greatest precision, care and sensitivity. Most people find treatments deeply relaxing.

What Results Can Be Expected?

As it is a holistic treatment, you will notice an improvement in overall health and wellbeing, as well as a reduction in facial lines and an increased firmness of the face,  Over a course of treatment, results are apparent as the health and elasticity of skin improves.

How Long Do The Effects Last?

Effects can usually be expected to last for at least six months following a course of treatment, and even longer with regular top-up treatments and a healthy lifestyle.

What Should I Expect During A Treatment?

Prior to treatment, a full consultation will be carried out to determine if any health issues need addressing, and to discuss the specific aims and expectations of each individual client. Points will then be used in the body and / or ears for grounding and in order to improve and regulate hormone response. Your face will be cleansed and fine needles will be inserted into facial points to address the problems identified during the assessment.  Once the needles are removed the treatment will finish with a soothing facial massage.

Is It Safe?

Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture is very safe when administered by an experienced practitioner, and has actually been used for almost a thousand years. Treatment dates back to the Song Dynasty in Imperial China where both the empress and the emperor’s concubines used the technique to maintain their youthful looks.

What Is The Best Age To Start?

Keeping your skin in excellent condition is easier than curing a problem that has already occurred. Therefore, it is best to commence cosmetic acupuncture in your 30s or 40s. However, good results are still achieved on clients in their 70s.

Are There Side-Effects?

Following a treatment, it is possible that very small red markings are visible where the needles have been placed, but these tend to fade quickly. On very rare occasions, localized bruising may occur when the needles are removed but can be treated instantly and effectively with the application of arnica gel. Although such bruising may be unsightly, it is not actually detrimental to the object of treatment as it is indicative of the body’s healing response, in which healing nutrients and enzymes are sent to the area.

Does It Work As An Anti-Aging Treatment?

Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture not only helps eliminate lines and wrinkles, it also reduces puffiness around the face, dark circles underneath the eyes and any pimples and scars that may be evident. Similarly it reduces sagginess and the double-chin effect, helping to create a more vibrate skin tone and youthful complexion.

Who Can Have This Treatment?

Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture should not be done during pregnancy and is not recommended for those diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure, epilepsy, or individuals who have a pacemaker or a problem with bleeding or bruising.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

Acupuncture stimulates the nerves in the skin and muscles as well as increases the release of the body’s natural painkillers: endorphin and serotonin. It also stimulates the nervous system, as well as hormone outputs, circulation, antibody production and allergic responses. Furthermore, it benefits the respiratory, digestive, urinary and reproductive systems.  It does all this through the insertion of ultra-fine sterilised needles into specific points on the body that were first recorded by physicians in ancient China.
